Many
of you may remember our grandparents, Larry and Maizie ("Ma") Kelly and
their fourteen children operating the refreshment stand, servicing both
visitors and residents of South Boston. During the depression, when most
people could not afford any extras or pleasures in life, "Kelly's
Landing" provided young suitors with the opportunity to treat and
date to a "a French Fry" or "one of each" while walking along the South
Boston Strandway. On the way back, an ice cream cone topped off the evening
perfectly.
Upon the deaths of Larry (1939) and Ma (1952,) our parents continued the
"Kelly's Landing" tradition. Kelly's specialty was deep fried
seafood, particularly clams. Kelly's was also known as a meeting place
for South Boston residents to have a bite in the open air with their neighbors.
In 1954, the original Public Landing structure was destroyed by a combination
of hurricane Carol and a fire. The rebuilt Landing stood until the summer
of 1997. The Kelly family had continued operating business until 1974.
Now
enjoy the same great taste of our famous fried clams and fresh fish again,
as part of our exciting menu that will suit every taste. Brought to you
by the third generation of Kelly family, Dick Kelly.
